————— THE STORY —————
From the Dolomites to Milan to Hamilton, Ontario
The Conthe were chair weavers from Rivamonte Agordino and Gosaldo, in the Agordino valley of the Dolomites. Their working tradition travelled across Italy and France, carrying simple tools, materials, and practical knowledge from village to village.
Scopelament del Conza is a trade language associated with this community. Benvegnù Heritage approaches this heritage as a living practice, with care for the stories and sources that support it.
Bruno Pallone learned chair weaving within his family in Milan and later developed his own practice. Today Benvegnù Heritage continues this work in Hamilton, Ontario, with Anna Maria de Leonardis contributing an artistic perspective through colour, decorative art, and design.

Bruno possesses a Fusèt — the traditional weaving tool — dated 1905, gifted to him by his master Tita Bosol. It remains in active use today.

The studio holds the complete typewritten manuscript of Prof. Gian Pietro Zanin — 76 pages documenting the art of the Conthe and the proverbs of Gosaldo, published in August 1978.

Bruno's brother Dario Pallone and his son Matteo continues the craft in Milan. Together they represent one of the last active lineages of the Conthe tradition.

— THE CRAFT VOCABULARY —
Methods, materials, and patterns — each learned through practice.

The classic Thonet technique. Six passes — two orthogonal, four diagonal — creating the iconic hexagonal pattern. Each hole is hand-threaded. No shortcuts.

Traditional rush weaving using natural palustre rush. The oldest technique of the Conthe — unchanged since the 18th century.

Danish cord technique — tightly twisted paper cord woven in complex geometric patterns. Both seat and back. Durable, elegant, contemporary.

A rare technique: canes radiating from a central medallion outward, creating a sunray pattern. Requires progressive geometric adaptation. Maximum complexity.

Flat bamboo and reed strips woven on arched frames. The technique of the Chiavarina — one of Italy's most iconic chair forms, born in Chiavari, Liguria.

The most prized technique learned, famous in France: rush cords covered with coloured rye straw, producing an extremely durable and beautiful finish.

A graduate of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, Milan, Anna Maria brings a formally trained artistic vision to Benvegnù Heritage. Her work spans decorative painting, stencil design, and original canvas work distinguished by an exceptional command of colour.
During the height of Milan's fashion era, she created live stencil work during runway shows for designers including Mariteau Girboue — work that required both precision and spontaneity in equal measure.
Her paintings speak the same language as Bruno's weaving: geometric structure, natural rhythm, bold chromatic choices. The fibres Bruno weaves become the forms Anna Maria paints.

Every piece restored by Benvegnù Heritage is one of a kind.
Bruno works on commission — chairs, armchairs, settees, chaise longues —
using techniques passed down from the Conthe masters of Gosaldo,
in the Agordino valley, preserved since 1905 and carried living
to Hamilton, Ontario.

Intreccio in bambù e midollino su telaio ad arco. La Chiavarina — icona della tradizione ligure italiana — restaurata con le tecniche dei maestri Conthe dell’Agordino. Ogni listello teso a mano, ogni nodo controllato ad occhio.
Per chi desidera un restauro più accessibile, Benvegnù Heritage propone anche la lavorazione in xilocord — carta kraft intrecciata ad alta resistenza, alternativa tradizionale al bambù e al midollino. Stesso rigore artigianale, estetica autentica, costo contenuto.
Poltrona con Medaglione
Caneggiattura stellata a schema radiale su poltrona con medaglione ovale. Le canne partono dal centro irradiandosi verso la cornice esterna come raggi di sole — una tecnica rarissima che richiede adattamento progressivo del pattern. Alta complessità, risultato unico.
